Live from Chicago … it's Andy Samberg and Rahm Emanuel.
The Saturday Night Live star, who often impersonated the former White House chief of staff on the show, was spotted at a Chicago train station on Friday helping Emanuel's mayoral campaign, according to a video posted on the Chicago Sun-Times website.
The comedian awkwardly shook commuters hands and urged them to vote for Emanuel.
"I mean he's going to be the most overqualified mayor of all time, right?" Samberg told a reporter, adding that he ran the West Wing for nearly two years.
Emanuel, a Chicago native known best for his brash negotiating ability, is strongly outpacing his opponents in campaign money – having raised more than his top three rivals combined, according to The Washington Post. He's also received support from numerous Democratic heavyweights, including former President Bill Clinton.
Samberg, however, may have been his most ironic endorsee yet. In his impersonation of Emanuel stepping down from the office, he poked fun at his reputation as one of the most frightening men in the White House.
"Do I lack even basic social skills?" Samberg-turned-Emanuel asked. "Absolutely."
Comedic jibes aside, Samberg apparently thinks highly of the sharp-tongued candidate and is a staunch supporter. He even reportedly appeared at a fundraiser on Friday for Emanuel. And while Emanuel's brother, Ari, is a well-known talent agent, Samberg has held tight to his representation at another agency since the beginning of his career.
His only explanation to reporters for being there, according to the video, was he was just unoccupied last week.
"It's an off week from the show so I didn't have much else to do," he quipped.
While he doesn't seem the type who would enjoy being mocked, Emanuel said he always enjoyed Samberg's impersonations of him on the show.
"I've always found it funny," he said.
