Senate panel OKs Santa Clara judge for U.S. court

Davila was one of 11 judicial nominees whose confirmations were recommended by the committee without any dissenting votes. The panel unanimously approved all 11 last year, but Republicans blocked their confirmation votes in the full Senate.

Davila, 58, spent seven years as a Santa Clara County public defender and 13 years in private law practice before Gov. Gray Davis appointed him to the Superior Court in San Jose in 2001.

He is a former president of the county bar association and La Raza Lawyers of Santa Clara County. If confirmed, he would be the only Latino judge in the Northern District of California, which is based in San Francisco.

Obama nominated Davila in May on the recommendation of Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., to succeed U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel, who has transferred to senior status with a reduced caseload.
