Dir: Julian Schnabel; starring: Freida Pinto, Hiam Abbass. Rating: * *
Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) lays an egg here, adapting an autobiographical book by his own girlfriend, Rula Jebreal, and doing a hamfisted job of it. Schnabel wants to lionise three generations of Palestinian women fighting in their different ways for freedom.
Hiam Abbass kicks things off as Hind Husseini, who founds an institute for refugee orphans .
The child of rape and a suicidal mother, Freida Pinto’s journalist-to-be looks troubled and lovely, and espouses no worthwhile point of view. Upfront only with a Vanessa Redgrave cameo, Schnabel wants an effort badge for partisan compassion, but effort (and any sense of shape, urgency, or ideological engagement) is just what’s lacking.
