Fable 3 has been out for over five months now and has received a couple downloadable content packages from developer Lionhead. Their last DLC package, Understone, wasn’t all that thrilling and provided little to no substance to the world of Albion. After a modest wait, Lionhead has finally provided a DLC episode that provides plenty of additional content and will invoke players to revisit Albion.
The latest DLC, Traitor’s Keep, is far more expansive in mission types and content than any Fable DLC before it. Picking up after the ending of Fable 3, your character has been plagued with the deadly disease known as boredom. Albion has become a dull land since the story of Fable 3 concluded, but things are about to get interesting once again for the kingdom.
Opening with an assassination attempt on your character’s life, Traitor’s Keep delivers a strong opening and continues with a powerful delivery of quests. Vicious convicts have escaped from the prison isle of Ravenscar Keep and each want to enact a coup d'tat. To protect your crown and status as the ruler of Albion, you’ll travel to Ravenscar Keep and new locations to battle powerful adversaries. Offering plenty of variety in atmosphere and style, each new area delivers its own unique feel.
A unique area you’ll visit is Clockwork Island, which is inhabited by the evil genius Faraday -- the inventor of everything in Fable 3 -- and his army of evil robots. This environment aesthetic design is an ersatz futuristic styling, but still holds the Renaissance styling as the rest of Albion. The robotic soldiers are quite challenging and offer more of a threat than any enemy in Fable 3’s main game. If you found Fable 3 to be too easy, then these robot competitors will be a delightful change of pace.
Of the locations you’ll visit in Traitor’s Keep the most disturbing will be Godwin Estate. Residing on the estate is a witch by the name of Mary, whom is quite strange and disturbing in her own right. Conducting eerie experiments and creating a concoction that will bring about all sorts of horrifying trouble, her desire is to create havoc and a monstrosity of a final encounter. The final battle of the DLC is far richer than the final encounter of Fable 3’s main quest and with that being the case, it’s really something you need to witness for yourself as it’s a rewarding great final encounter and it adds to grand tale of Fable 3’s story.
Traitor’s Keep delivers an experience that Fable fans have wanted: more storyline and plenty of exploration. Some new moral choices, weapons, and outfits are present, but the new quests are truly remarkable. If you felt burnt after the last Fable 3 DLC and are hesitant about this one, it’s understandable, but Traitor’s Keep is a damn fine downloadable episode and it sets the groundwork for future adventures in Albion and the Fable series. It’s somewhat short in length, but what is offered is great and should be played by any Fable fan.
Overall: 8.5/10
