Majority say political debates today are 'much too angry': poll

Politics are more poisonous than ever.

So says a new Harris Poll in which a staggering 87% of respondents confirmed what anybody who has tuned into talk radio or a cable news show already knows - that political discussions are angry and bad-tempered.

A clear 67% majority believes that the political climate is the foulest it has ever been, Harris reported in findings released Monday.

Women are more turned off by the heated political rhetoric than men. Democrats and Independents are more fed up with bare-knuckled politics than Republicans.

Some 34% of the GOPers said political discourse was "much too angry" compared to 48% of the Democrats and 50% of the Independents.

Senior citizens and aging Baby Boomers were also more offended by the lack of civil discourse in politics than younger people.

Most (72%) believe that "how American politicians treat one another influences how American citizens treat one another," pollsters found.

Also, a large majority said they don't like it when politicians or political commentators call their opponents "enemies," talk about thrashing them, or use war-like language.

The 3,171 adults who took part in the Harris poll were surveyed online between February 14 and 21.

Historically, surveys have found that while people dislike political attack ads and takedowns - they pay attention to them.
