Three Rings to launch first ever Doctor Who MMO

Given all the wonderful games and game-worlds that Three Rings have created -- Whirled, Bang! Howdy, the iPad app Corpse Craft, the Facebook apps Bite Me and The Everything Game, and, er, some other inconsequential MMO to do with cartoon pirates, what's that one called again? -- one just has to wonder from time to time, "Whatever will they think of next?"

Wonder no more. Yesterday Captain Cleaver broke the news on Twitter: Three Rings have partnered with BBC Worldwide to bring us Doctor Who: Worlds in Time -- the first Doctor Who MMO.

Cool, huh? This is no April Fool's joke -- it's not even April, for crying out loud! Says Forbes blogger David M. Ewalt, the game will "allow players to enter the TARDIS and be set a challenge by the mysterious Time Lord." It'll be Flash-based, so it'll be platform-independent like Puzzle Pirates but, unlike YPP, it'll require no download (assuming your browser is already Flash-capable). It'll be free to play. And as we've come to expect from a Three Rings MMO, challenges will be set for both small groups and large, giving you plenty to do no matter where you are on the introvert/extravert scale at any given login.

But Doctor Who fans may be concerned as to whether the game will be a worthy addition to the franchise. Licensed by the BBC or not, will Three Rings really get this right? Ewalt isn't worried at all:

Three Rings may be best known as the developer of Puzzle Pirates, a clever multiplayer PC puzzle game that’s become a cult favorite. They also have designed their home office to look like the interior of The Nautilus from Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. So I have faith they’re geeky enough to understand the Doctor Who franchise.

Look for the game to launch later this year.
