Possible suspect determined in Nob Hill apartment homicide

Authorities in San Francisco, California have determined a possible suspect in connection with a vicious slaying of a 67-year-old man, whose body was discovered last week inside an apartment, located in the city’s Nob Hill district.

The lifeless body of the victim, who was later identified as Jack Baker, was discovered inside the apartment at approximately 6:15pm February 11 by San Francisco police officers who were summoned to the location to perform a well-being check on him. The apartment is situated on the 1000 block of Bush Street.

The victim seemed to have been brutally stabbed, choked, and assaulted.

The last time Baker was seen alive was February 4, a week before his body was discovered.

Based on relevant physical evidence, police have taken 24-year-old Waheed Kesmatyer into custody Friday in connection with Baker’s slaying. Kesmatyer was learned to be the victim’s roommate and, according to police, he may be responsible for the slaying.

Despite the arrest made, police have not mentioned the possible motive for the killing; however, they did say that Baker and Kesmatyer were roommates since October 2010.

It was learned that Kesmatyer was already sitting in the Marin County Jail for begging (a misdemeanor) near Highway 101 in San Rafael. He was taken into custody for that offense February 10.

Police say that Kesmatyer is expected to be extradited to San Francisco some time soon. Once there, prosecutors will decide whether he should be prosecuted on charges related to Baker’s slaying.

Jack Baker was known as a local artist or a window display designer at a Macy’s store in San Rafael and was admired by neighbors.
