Soviet Union beats US in space race
An unmanned Soviet satellite made the first ever moon landing today in 1966.
It was the Soviet Union’s 12th attempt.
The landing gave it a big lead in the space race against the US. The Americans did not reach the moon for another three years.
Today's mission showed that a heavy object could land on the moon without getting swallowed up by the lunar dust.
Terrible tsar reveals his true face
Ivan the Terrible lived up to his name on this day in 1565.
He declared that Russian's richest regions now belonged to him, while the poorer regions were left to crumble under the old system.
Moscow itself was carved up street by street – and sometimes even building by building.
Still, this was not Ivan the Terrible at his most terrible. His reign was a period characterized by mass-scale torture and murder.
