Lori Anne Parker has an image of her heart on a wall in her studio. It's a photo taken by her surgeon during Parker's triple-bypass operation in July 2009. Parker's experience with heart trauma led her to become a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association and to create the watercolor and oil paintings on view in Atrial Articulations now through the end of February at Rumours Wine and Art Bar.
An artist's reception takes place 4-6 p.m. Saturday.
While recovering from surgery — and the two heart attacks that preceded it — Parker couldn't risk the fumes from oil paint, nor the exertion of covering large canvases with her expressive brushstrokes. She began working in watercolor instead.
Her illness also affected her subject matter; rather than the landscapes, houses and trees of her earlier work, she's now drawn to skeletal, heart and body imagery.
Teaming up with Rumours owner Christy Shuff gave Parker the opportunity to show her art and to promote awareness of women's heart issues. In addition to the exhibition, Rumours is hosting a wine tasting (Thursday) and two wine dinners (Feb. 14 and 24), with a percentage of proceeds going to the Go Red for Women campaign.
"It was all through art," Parker, who has a doctorate in philosophy and works as an editor at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, says of becoming one of 15 national spokeswomen for the campaign.
Atrial Articulations remains on view at Rumours Wine and Art Bar through Feb. 28. The venue is at 2304 12th Ave. S. and is open 5 p.m.-midnight Monday through Saturday. For information, call 292-9400 or go to www.lorianne
