Arizona shooting update: Politico reports Gabrielle Giffords awake

A new report by Politico states that Gabrielle Giffords, the Arizona congresswoman who was shot in the head while leading a political meet and greet in Tuscon, Arizona is awake.  According to reports, 18 people were wounded and there were six fatalities.  During a press conference held earlier Saturday evening, Sheriff Clarence Dupnik had said 19 people were wounded but CNN confirmed the correct number is 18.

During a hospital press conference held Saturday afternoon it was learned that reports stating Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had died were false and that she had underwent brain surgery.  Police statements indicate that the alleged gunman, Jared Lee Loughner, shot the victims, including Giffords at an approximate 3-4 foot range.

Doctors said that Gabrielle Giffords responded to commands following the surgery which was a good indication, however, they did not negate the seriousness of her injuries.  She is listed in critical condition.

Politico reports, “Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is awake in her hospital room and has recognized her husband, astronaut and Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, a source close to the family told POLITICO Saturday night.”
