Why politicians love to talk about Natalie Portman

Why politicians love to talk about Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman may be an Academy Award winning actress, a spokesperson for FINCA International and Christian Dior and possess one of Hollywood’s most watched baby bumps, but there’s something else going on with Natalie these days: she’s become the subject of conversation for several politicians.  Why do politicians like to talk about Natalie Portman?

Whether she is stirring controversy with the conservative right for her baby before marriage romance, or being compared to Rahm Emanuel by Vice President Joe Biden,  as Joe Biden recently did, it seems no one can get enough of Natalie.  When the Vice President mentions your name during a speech there’s no doubt about it- you’ve made it!

Vice President Joe Biden spoke about Natalie (who was born Natalie Hershlag) and Rahm Emanuel as the two both trace family ties to Moldova, during his speech from the Opera House Square in Chisinau on March 11, 2011.  Vice President Biden stated, “ And by the way, Moldova has made its own contributions -- significant contributions to American society and to American culture.  Let me give you two recent examples.  A fellow named Rahm Emmanuel, President Obama's former chief of staff, who is the newly elected mayor of Chicago in Illinois, America's third largest city, he says that he has inherited his legendary toughness from his Moldovan grandfather.   I'm serious.  Who became a labor leader in America after immigrating to the United States.

And someone we appreciate even more, Natalie Portman, who last month won an Academy Award for best actress in America, I don't know whether you know this, but she told us she carries in her wallet a picture, a photograph of her Moldovan grandmother.

And I know this is not on the teleprompter, but she's a heck of a lot better looking than Rahm Emmanuel. “

Wow!  Not only did the Vice President say Natalie Portman was better looking than Rahm, but also said she was appreciated more than Rahm Emanuel.  Interestingly, according to the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova to the State of Israel, Israeli’s from Moldova are held in high regard.  According to the Embassy, “Israelis originating from Moldova are highly valued in Israel as skilled professionals. They are employed in various spheres of Israeli economy, public sector and arts. Some of them have achieved impressive results, and are nowadays well known in Israel and abroad.”

With Rahm Emanuel and Natalie Portman descending from Moldovans, we’d have to agree.
