1939 Melvyn Bragg was born on 6 October, 1939 in Wigton Cumbria, where many of his novels are set.
1950s Bragg won a scholarship to Oxford where he read Modern History at Wadham College.
1961 Started as a trainee the BBC, spending his first two years at the World Service. He later worked for the Third Programme and the Home Service before joining the production team of Huw Wheldon's Monitor arts programme.
1967 Started writing and broadcasting.
1978-2010 Edited and presented The South Bank Show.
1982-1990 Head of Arts at LWT.
1988-1998 Presenter of Start the Week on Radio 4.
1998 Appointed to the House of Lords as Baron Bragg, of Wigton in the County of Cumbria.
1998-present Presenter of In Our Time.
Bragg has also written 20 novels, the latest of which is Remember Me which was published in 2008.
