Death penalty abolished in Illinois

Opponents of capital punishment had reason to celebrate today when Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill that makes his state the 16th to abolish the death penalty.

As of March 2011, the following U.S. states have abolished the death penalty: Alaska, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. The District of Columbia has also abolished the death penalty.
