Need a treasure map? Try your luck at the Black Market!

Still on the hunt for your February 2011 Seal o' Piracy? Having trouble obtaining shipwrecks and buried treasure expeditions in the course of your pillaging? If you've got Pieces of Eight to burn, try your luck in the Black Box lottery and you just might nab a chart. Black boxes are furniture items available for purchase from any island's Black Market for the Magnate-reputation-fueling price of 10,000 PoE. (At this time, they are the only thing you can buy at a Black Market.) Black Box mostly resemble wrapped presents: you can inscribe them with special messages, you can place them in a scene, and, most importantly, you can open them and find out what's inside.

You've got a 17.35% chance that your Black Box contains an expedition chart. The only thing you're more likely to find is a unique black market trinket.

But be warned! The contents of a Black Box, if functional, are likely to crumble to dust in no time flat. If you find a treasure map that says "dusts in less than 2 days," don't be surprised if it vanishes from your booty in 25 hours precisely.

The moral of this story? Don't open a Black Box unless you're ready to use its contents right away! That means you should have a ship ready to go, an Officer badge or higher on hand, and charting capability to pretty much anywhere in the ocean. Otherwise you might as well just blow your 10K PoE on poker, right?
