Aretha Franklin: Fantasia overreacted to Grammys tribute snub

According to singing legend Aretha Franklin, a former "American Idol" winner needs to learn some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

R&B singer Fantasia Barrino said last week she chose to skip the Feb. 13 Grammy Awards because she wasn't included in the opening tribute to the Queen of Soul alongside divas like Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and Martina McBride.

But Franklin, 68, has some choice words for the young singer: You can't always get what you want.

"Fantasia is still young in the business, and although we all love and appreciate her, she must understand that in this business of show business, she will not always get to participate in everything she would like participate in," Franklin said in a statement to USA Today.

Barrino, 26, made note of the snub when she appeared on BET's "106 & Park" the day after the award show.

"Last night they were honoring someone who is my idol, Aretha Franklin, and there is no way I could have sat there and not got the happy feet and wanting to jump on the mic because she is my favorite, so I felt like, you know, at the end of the day, I should have been on that stage, so I kind of did my own little thing last night," Barrino said.

Though Franklin said she thinks the singer overreacted, she was still "sorry" to hear of Barrino's disappointment.

"I'm sure it was not an intentional omission," Franklin said of Barrino’s supposed Grammy diss. "I will see Fantasia over the summer here in Detroit."
