2011 Oscar Predictions – True Grit to win Best Cinematography

On Sunday, February 27th The Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences will present the 83rd Academy Awards. The elite of Hollywood, filmmakers and stars, will converge on the most special day of the year. This year the Academy Awards will be hosted by actress Anne Hathaway and actor James Franco.

My Oscar nominations are broken down by category. This is in-depth look at each nominated film.

The Movie Awards Examiner’s pick for Best Cinematography is Roger Deakins for the film True Grit.

This year there are five films nominated for Best Cinematography:

Black Swan – Matthew Libatique

Inception – Wally Pfister

The King’s Speech – Danny Cohen

The Social Network – Jeff Cronenweth

True Grit – Roger Deakins

Black Swan is my least favorite nomination in this category. I am not a big fan of the camera techniques applied to this film, but it does match the mood of the film and the main characters mental state.

Inception is a beautifully shot film, but where does authentic scenery end and special effects start? It is difficult to say. I believe that Inception will find more honors with visual effects and sound categories.

The King’s Speech is another beautifully shot film and I said it in my review – no one has made fog look better. This film has big potential to win an Oscar for Best Film and if it has a grand sweep among the categories, Danny Cohen could bring an Oscar home.

The Social Network most definitely was due a nomination in this category. The low light during the film is difficult to bring to the screen and quite necessary to pull off the appropriate mood.

But my favorite and I think the most likely choice to win an Oscar for Best Cinematography is True Grit. Roger Deakins had the advantage of shooting vast vistas and the starry, starry night scene toward the end of the film is masterful. No other film nominated is as visually stunning as True Grit.

Whatever your movie choice this week, please remember your movie theater etiquette: silence your cell phones, no texting, don't talk during the film and remove your children if they become a distraction to other audience members. Don't forget that laughing, crying and cheering are always approved behavior and even encouraged.
