Stabenow cheers Chevy Volt's `Car of Year' award

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow says she's excited that the Chevrolet Volt was named Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show.

The Michigan Democrat visited the Detroit show Monday, the first day of media previews. The show is open for the public Saturday through Jan. 23 at Cobo Center.

The Detroit Free Press says her daughter-in-law Sara Stabenow is a materials engineer who worked on the Volt.

Stabenow is co-chair of the Senate Manufacturing Caucus.

Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also had planned to attend but canceled after Democratic Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot.
