Showtime picks up 'Dexter' for a sixth season

Showtime's blood-soaked series "Dexter" has been picked up for a sixth season.

With one more episode left in the fifth outing, officials at the pay-cable network have ordered another go-round, which will begin production next spring.

The pickup should come as no shock. The series, which stars Michael C. Hall as a murderous blood-splatter expert for the Miami Police Department, has earned raves from critics and saw its ratings go up this season.

"To grow its audience so significantly in its fifth season is an enormous accomplishment by this amazing cast and crew," said Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins in a statement.

"Dexter" generated its second most-watched episode ever last month, with 2.54 million people watching, up 43% from the season premiere. That was second to its fourth-season finale, which averaged 2.57 million viewers.

Besides Hall, the show stars Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez, David Zayas and James Remar.

The ubiquitous Neil Patrick Harris has been tapped to host Spike TV's "Video Game Awards," set to air live Saturday at 8 p.m. Oliva Munn, Dane Cook, Denise Richards, Tony Hawk and Nathan Fillion are among the stars scheduled to be there. ... FX has not renewed the drama "Terriers" for a second season.

Jim Kerr will celebrate his birthday on the air Thursday during the "Jim Kerr Rock 'n' Roll Morning Show" (5-9 a.m.). Expected to call in during the broadcast are Clarence Clemons, Donald Trump, Buddy Valastro, Chris Meloni, Jill Hennessy and more. Co-host Shelli Sonstein will offer her wishes in the studio.

WABC/Ch. 7 sports director Scott Clark may be leaving at the end of the year, but he's told pal Adele C. Smithers, president of the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, he'll always be available to emcee her fund-raising events. Clark, a recovering alcoholic, has been a tireless supporter of the Smithers Foundation.
