But ITV producers face a daunting task trying to beep out the hellraising Mancunian's foul language. He got banned from Channel 4 in the 1990s for saying "f***" on a live TFI Friday show.
Ryder, 48, whose band had hits with Step On and Kinky Afro in 1990, landed in Australia last night and declared: "Why did I sign? I've clearly lost the plot!"
But he added he wasn't planning to clash with jungle comrades. He said: "I'm going to be very nice. People will see a new side to me.
"I'm a 48-year-old family man now. I won't be swearing and I'm going to miss my kids. To be honest, I have no idea how I'm going to react. But I'm being given a supply of cigarettes and I'm looking forward to meeting Ant and Dec - they're like Scooby and Shaggy!
"What am I frightened of? The people. I'm fine with snakes and spiders, but not the people."
Ryder joins contestants including comic Dom Joly, ex-MP Lembit Opik and actress Britt Ekland.
