Pleasing John Malkovich

John Malkovich, Eva Mendes and Gael Garcia Bernal will soon make clear what their take is on The Edge, a Russian war drama that mixes love and hate, and which is taking part in the Marrakech International Film Festival.

The all-star jury will choose the best among 15 productions from America, Spain, South Korea and Australia, among others, vying for the festival’s top honors.

The Edge is a drama to divide audiences, and is Russia’s wannabe contender for an Oscar.

It is set in the wake of WWII somewhere at the edge of the world in the Siberian taiga, where men and women camp laborers are working like dogs, supplying steam engines with fuel.

The film revolves around Ignat, a war hero and a risky engine driver who, much to the indignation of his neighborhood, falls in love with the young daughter of a killed German engineer, who spent the entire war hiding in a deserted train in the forest.

The film’s director, Alexey Uchitel, was quoted as saying, The Edge made an impact on him by the scale of its conception and the scope of shooting.

“The challenge was to reach the hearts of the viewers,” the director said.

The closing ceremony of the far-reaching festival in Morocco will give a clue as to whether The Edge has got the real edge over other films in the running.
