Registrar Dave Macdonald had said last week that final results from the election last Tuesday would be released Monday. But by the end of the day, "a few thousand" provisional ballots remained uncounted, said Guy Ashley, a county spokesman.
Ashley said he did not know when final results would be released. City Councilwoman Jean Quan, who is leading the mayor's race, said it could be Friday.
Former state Sen. Don Perata had 34 percent of first-place votes in the initial tallying of the ranked-choice balloting, while Quan was in second with 25 percent. But when eliminated candidates' second- and third-place votes were redistributed, Quan vaulted into the lead.
The Perata campaign issued a statement Monday saying that although the ranked-choice system has so far "produced an unusual outcome, we remain confident that Oakland voters' clear first-choice preference for Sen. Perata as Oakland's next mayor will hold true once every ballot has been certified and counted."
