Christian Bale's Batman is about to take his last flight.
The 36-year-old actor announced on Monday that "The Dark Knight Rises," the third installment in Christopher Nolan's rebooted franchise, will be his final go-round in the iconic cape and cowl.
"The thing is that this will be, I believe, unless Chris says different, this will be the last time I'm playing Batman," Bale told eonline.com while promoting his new film "The Fighter."
The same apparently goes for director Nolan, who took over the superhero franchise in 2005 with the prequel "Batman Begins" and its 2008 sequel, "The Dark Knight."
"[I'm] very excited, because if Chris maintains, this will be the last one," Bale told mtvnews.com of the sequel, currently on track for a 2012 release. "We've got to up it."
Besides its title and the fact that both Bale and Michael Caine (who plays Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred) will be returning, "Dark Knight Rises," details are few and far between.
Tom Hardy, who recently appeared in Nolan's summer hit "Inception," has reportedly been cast in an unspecified villain role, and Nolan was reported to be casting two female roles earlier this month: one as a love interest for Batman, and another, still-unspecified, enemy for the Dark Knight.
Bale, for his part, has no plans to pay credence to the rumors
"Until Chris tells me, I don't believe it," Bale told eonline.com. "It's gotta be from his mouth, or else I don't really know."
